You can think of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) as a smart barcode. Like other smart devices, it can connect wirelessly to communicate information back to a centralized database.
1. Technology That Only Feels New
RFID might feel brand new but its roots go all the way back to World War II!
In the 1940s radar could detect incoming airplanes, but radar operators couldn't tell if a plane belonged to friends or enemies. As a result, Allies developed a tiny radio transmitter for their planes that signaled back to base "We are on your side."
Then, in the 1970s–1980s engineers realized this same trick could track valuable property. Farmers began using tiny RFID ear tags to track cattle health and movement. Today, though you may not even realize it, RFID is everywhere!
- Pet Microchips: If a lost dog is brought to a shelter, a quick scan behind its shoulders pulls up a unique identification number linked to the owner.

2. The 3 Core Components
Every RFID system relies on three basic parts working together like a team.
1. The RFID Tag
"The name tag." A tiny item or sticker attached to a product. It contains a microchip and an antenna.
2. The Reader
"The antenna." A device that sends out invisible radio waves to search for nearby tags and receive the information returned by them. Readers can be handheld for mobility or fixed to structures such as doorways, payment terminals, and toll booths.
3. The Software
"The brain." The Reader sends the information from the RFID tag to a computer via software that is programmed to record and interpret the data.

The interaction between the tag and the reader happens in four quick steps, taking less than a second:
The Reader Calls Out
The reader sends out quiet, invisible radio waves searching for a tag.
The Tag Wakes Up
When a tag comes close enough, it absorbs a tiny amount of energy from those radio waves. That little spark of energy is enough to wake up the tag's microchip.
The Tag Waves Back
The microchip uses its own tiny antenna to beam its unique code back to the reader.
The Software Takes Action
The reader catches the signal and hands the message off to the software to complete the assigned task.
